Assignment for Sexual Assault and Sex Trafficking Awareness

1. Navigate the website provided by the CDC:

http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/sexualviolence/trafficking.html (copy and paste link) and identify 3 things you learned from this site.

2. Search in your community (Crestview, FL) and identify local resources that provide shelter, safety, and short term or long term restoration for victimized women. Findings will vary depending on your community. Do not forget you can include services that cover both physical and mental health conditions resulting from sexual assault or sex trafficking.

An example:

While navigating the website, I learned many new things that I never knew about sex trafficking.

1) I did not know that any sexual activity with a minor was considered trafficking. I knew that it was illegal and came with serious repercussions but not to the point of trafficking.

2) I also didn’t know that the men and young boys are affected almost on the same level as women. When we think about sex trafficking, we think of older men assaulting young women when that isn’t always the case.

3) Finally, I knew that sexual assault victims can be mental and physically damaged but I didn’t know to what extent. Sexual victims can contract STDs, become pregnant and face serious depression.

Locally, there are many shelters and places where women can go for help. In Macon, there is a lot of cases of sexual assault and I like that even at our school, they put up signs to try to help students report anonymously. The Crisis Line & Safe House of Central Ga, Salvation Army, and Partnership Against Domestic Violence are all places women can go if they feel like they are being sexually abused by strangers or even their partners.
