Statement 1:

“Research methods can be godly.” I believe this statement is backed up by Scripture in many places, but one verse seems to stick out to me more than the others. 2 Timothy 2:15 in the English Standard Version says, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” This passage speaks to having searched answers out and through researching, studying and other forms of acquiring information, come to a conclusion that is “approved” by God because we rightly handle His Word of truth. I believe God wants us to figure things out on our own and to dig into his word and study it. In this way, research methods can be godly because we are desiring to be more like God as we research and study his Word.

Statement 2:

“Research methods can be ungodly.” Romans 16:18 comes to mind when thinking of an ungodly way to use research methods. In the English Standard Version in Romans 16:18 it says, “For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” Obviously deception would be a very ungodly way to conduct research and trying to deceive people through our research findings would be wrong as well. True, sufficient and trustworthy information is the way to conduct and report research through research methods, and as a Christian it would be wrong to participate in an ungodly, deceptive research method.

Godly vs. Ungodly Research

Statement #1

Research methods can be godly. God wants us to seek and understand those things that we do not know. In Proverbs 2: 1-5 Solomon tells us:

“My son, accept my words. Store up my commands inside you. Let your ears listen to wisdom. Apply your heart to understanding. Call out for the ability to wise. Cry out for understanding. Look for it as you would look for silver. Search for it as you would search for hidden treasure. Then you will understand how to have respect for the Lord. You will find out how to know God” (New International Reader’s Version).

Here it shows that when we pursue knowledge, when we search for wisdom we are doing as God wants us to. God desires his children to be wise. The more we know, the more we can share with others. The more we understand, the more lies we can replace with truths. The more we research and learn, the more we can fight and stand for what is right and good. And when we stand for good, we stand with God.

Statement #2

On the other hand, research methods can also be ungodly. There is a lot of information put out in this world by researchers whose sole purpose is to define themselves and not follow the teachings of God. God wants us to follow his principals taught to us through the Holy-Spirit, not follow the agenda of man. For man is not the source of life, God is. 1 John 2:26-27 says:

“I’m writing these things to warn you about those who are trying to lead you down the wrong path. But you have received the Holy Spirit from God. He continues to live in you. So you don’t need anyone to teach you. God’s Spirit teaches you about everything. What he says is true. He doesn’t lie. Remain joined to Christ, just as you have been taught by the Spirit” (New International Reader’s Version).

Just as research can lead to more understanding of good, research can also lead us down a path of bad. And acknowledging the bad as the right is not the way of the Lord.
