Unit Overview:
In this unit, we will take a deeper look into nursing theory and philosophy, with an eye toward developing a personal definition of the metaparadigm of nursing.
Unit Objectives:
When you have successfully completed this unit you will be able to:
- Distinguish between the terms concept, theory, conceptual framework, model and philosophy.
- Identify the four central concepts (Person, Environment, Health/Illness, Nursing) defined in all nursing theories.
- Recognize the similarities and differences between selected nursing theories and frameworks.
- Describe how philosophies of nursing and nursing theory inform each other.
- Examine the relevance and utility of specific nursing theories to nursing practice.
- Develop a personal definition of the metaparadigm of nursing based on your practice and readings on theories and philosophies of nursing.
