Strategies for Stopping Underage Drinking

Underage drinking simply means drinking of alcohol by those who have not attained the minimal age of legal drinking, which is 21 years. Most youths prefer alcohol as their choice. Moreover, many young individuals below the age of 21 years do experience consequences of overdrinking beginning from their tender ages. As a result of these, there is a great public health problem in most countries due to underage drinking. Approximately 4,000 of young youths across the globe die as a result of underage drinking. These includes those who  die from car accidents, homicides, suicides as well as from other complications caused by underage drinking such as drowning and burns. For this reason, there is a need to stop or minimize underage drinking to reduce the mortality rate. Therefore, this paper will simply discuss the best strategies that could be used to help stop underage drinking.

Bonnie, R. J., O’Connell, M. E., National Research Council (U.S.) & National Research         Council (U.S.). (2004). reducing underage drinking: A collective responsibility. Washington, DC: National Academies Press

In this source book, Bonnie, O’Connell and US National Research Council, describes the importance of legal liability concerned with selling of alcohol to the youths. The authors point out that administrative regulations as well as liabilities is some of the strategies are enacted and enforced by the courts and corresponding legal regulation. Power of the court and legal rules ought to hold individuals selling alcoholic beverages accountable.  Tort liability has established civil liabilities concerning selling of alcohol to the youths. Penalties entail civil suit liability and fines to those found guilty for selling alcohol to the underage. Most liability provisions enacted by Tort regulateslicensing of the bars thus minimizing the provision of alcohol to the minors (Bonnie, O’Connell, National Research Council (U.S.) & National Research Council (U.S.), 2004)

This important source can help reduce underage drinking. First, the source has taken into considerations the negative results of alcohol among the youth. The source can be helpful since its directions can be used in alcohol establishments to prevent the sale of alcohol to the underage. For instance, the authors state, “Most liability provisions enacted by Tort in conjunction with actions of the court have also been directed to those licensed establishments to minimize the provision of alcohol to the minors.”

Borg, E. D. A. (2008). Risk perception, awareness and prevention measures to reduce            underage drinking and the illegal purchase of alcohol in Malta.Boca Raton, FL: Dissertation.com.

According to Borg (2008), School Strategies are the best methods to stop or reduce alcoholism among the young-aged population. He describes various factors that can help solve the problem including, interactive teaching techniques, resistance, social and personal skills, support and training from the teachers as well active involvement of both the community and the family. All teachers in school should always incorporate various skills to their pupils and students to help avoid and evade peer influence that may lead them to alcoholism including assertive, resistance, as well as refusal skills. In addition, there is an importance of Personal and Social Development Program (PSD) from primary to secondary schools so that these youths can be empowered in developing their personal attributes including social and group skills as well as assertiveness and self-esteem.

The article points out an important idea to both the parents and the teachers by stating the importance of good parental care and the importance of school in helping to reduce the rate of alcoholism among the younger youths. In my preview, this source should be taken serious and used in various primary and secondary schools to teach and advice the young on the importance of not drinking at an illegal age (Borg, 2008).

Fisher, G. L. (2006). Rethinking our war on drugs: Candid talk about controversial issues.   Westport, Conn: Praeger.

Fisher describes the importance of alcohol marketing restrictions as well as the importance of restricting alcohol access to minors. However, the author also states that this could only be possible if there were proper public awareness campaign concerning alcohol and drug abuse meant for discouraging the use of alcohol to a minor. In fact, campaigns should be conducted through the Media and any other sources that could reach a mass of people. There should also be programs meant for preventing the already young drinking individuals from drinking. Research have indicated the importance of brief interventions provided by physicians to effectively moderate the youths from drinking too much of alcohol. This should be applied at the early ages before these youths develop dependence to the extent of becoming addicted (Fisher, 2006).

The main ideas of the source are to advice the government as well as the parents to come up with campaigns across the globe to help minimize the rate of drinking among the youths. In my own preview, this source will be helpful in my project since I can use it in mobilizing people to start up an effective campaign that could see the end of underage drinking. It is applicable in the media and government in initiating constructive ideas of regulating underage drining drinking (Fisher, 2006)

Glenn, C. (2012). The Harbrace guide to writing. Boston, Mass: Wadsworth Cengage            Learning.

Glen describes the importance of having effective laws limiting drinking of alcohol before the age of 21. He states that there should be a real and effective commitment to the strategy of national prevention. There is need for better financed and visible focusing of adults to come up with campaigns of discouraging underage drinking, in addition, there should be higher taxes imposed on alcoholic beverages particularly on beers to discourage the youths from drinking since they cannot afford to buy alcohols at those prices. Instead, funding should be provided to aid in programs such as prevention and treatment of the youths from alcohol. Glen recommend enactment of a strong coordination from various agencies of the government that should come up and manage programs meant for addressing underage drinking (Glenn, 2012).

The book is basic  if taken into proper considerations, the congress, and other government agencies should use the source by taking into account its effective points that can help stop or reduce the underage drinking. In addition, the congress should pass laws in accordance that allows the coordination of various agencies to help stop or minimize alcoholism among the young. In my own preview, I see this source be the best in providing the strategies to help solve underage drinking. I will use the source in my project to describe and indicate the importance of involvement of government agencies and the congress in stopping underage drinking (Glenn, 2012).

National Research Council (U.S.), & National Research Council (U.S.). (2007). Preventing    teen motor crashes: Contributions from the behavioral and social sciences: workshop report. Washington, D.C: National Academies Press.

The National Research Council of the US has identified that underage drinking have caused a lot of accidents and car crashes since most of the youths always drive while they are already drunk. According to this source, teens are always vulnerable to a lot of risks of drinking and driving. Research have also identified that youths who drinks alcohol always experience impaired driving judgments. The author also describes that most teens are always not experienced in driving, and when they drink alcohol, they become more vulnerable to accidents than the matured adults. To help solve this problem, certain laws have been enacted so that teen drivers could always be stopped and tested for alcohol by using an alcohol blow device, in case found guilty, then their licenses will be withdrawn away from them and penalties given in addition. The licenses can be withdrawn even for months. This possibly helps to reduce the rate of alcohol drinking among the youth (National Research Council (U.S.) & National Research Council (U.S.), 2007).

The bookcan be used by the government in enacting and establishing laws and regulations to combat the rate of alcoholism among the youth as well as mortality rates on our roads. The teens as well can use the source to learn the negative effects of drinking alcohol that can in turn make them change their ways of life and consequently stop drinking at a tender age. In my own preview, I will assess this source as great one since it can help reduce the rate of deaths on our roads, in addition, I will also use the source in my project to help me in educating several youths on the importance of not taking alcohol`(National Research Council (U.S.) & National Research Council (U.S.), 2007).

In conclusion, alcoholism among our youths is a problem that should be controlled by the government as well as everyone in our society. Different authors above have provided the best strategies that can be used to combat this problem including programs in our schools, congress laws, and national campaigns among others. All these strategies provided by these authors are the best and when effectively used, and then alcoholism among the youth will be a gone case.
