Laboratory 6: Respiratory Function

Name and describe 1 disease state where carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is too low due to respiratory system dysfunction (a.k.a. respiratory alkalosis, 1 paragraph 2 pts.).  Cite your source (peer reviewed journal article, .gov or .edu website, or textbook acceptable, 1 pt.).  Name and describe 1 disease state where carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is too high due to respiratory system dysfunction (a.k.a. respiratory acidosis, 1 paragraph 2 pts.).  Cite your source(peer reviewed journal article, .gov or .edu website, or textbook acceptable, 1 pt.).  If carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is not in balance, what other blood gas is also not in homeostasis (1-2 sentences, 0.5 pt.)?  Discuss a disease that leads to decreased lung capacity measurements.  Include symptoms of the disease and its effects on respiratory system anatomy and physiology, and be sure to indicate if there are effects on the trachea or alveoli (3/4 page, 2.5 pts). Cite your source (peer reviewed journal article, .gov or .edu website, or textbook acceptable, 1 pt.).  Total length of about 2 pages, 11 points total.

BIO 1070L Make up Report for Laboratory 7: Testing Sugar Content in Beverages

Write a 2-3 page paper that discusses the following topics:

  1. Why it is important to know sugar content of beverages?  This should include information on health effects of consuming too much sugar (1 paragraph, 2 points).
  2. Describe types of sweeteners used in beverages (1 paragraph, 1 point).
  3. Explain how Benedict’s reagent reacts with sugars, including why it does not react with some types of sweeteners (1 paragraph, 2 points).
  4. Locate 5 different beverages and observed sugar content according to the label.  From what you know about sugar and health, discuss which of these beverages should be limited in consumption (1 paragraph, 2 points).
  5. Write an additional paragraph on any interesting information you found in researching sugar content in beverages ( 1 paragraph, 1 point).

Use your Zelman et al. text and lab manual as sources, but also cite 2 additional sources used in your research for this paper (2 points, peer-reviewed journal articles, other texts, .gov or .edu websites acceptable).  10 points total.
