professionalism-1

Application #3

For this application I would like you to reflect on the concept of professionalism. Being “professional” is usually assumed to mean looking and acting a certain way, in keeping with the expectations for that job or organization. Think of a job you know well either through personal experience or close observation and describe its specific markers of professionalism: how does a person need to look, dress and act to be perceived as professional? For the second part of your essay, consider who might be excluded from the job based on these criteria. Recall the dimensions of difference discussed by Allen in Difference Matters: race, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability, and class. Do the markers of professionalism have the effect of including or excluding anyone based on how they identify on these dimensions of difference? Your answer should be 1 ½ to 2 pages.
