This essay is your contribution to mining history – choose a mine, mining claim, or mining district, and research its history! Begin by browsing the documents in the Arizona Geological Survey’s “Mining Collections” located here: These are PDFs of paper files compiled about individual mines and prospects. Many of them may not have enough to go on, but some will, or you can get creative by looking at several claims in the same district. In addition to these sources, conduct as much primary source research about your project as you can – think newspapers, the technical press, government documents, perhaps even genealogy databases! The goal is to tell a history of your chosen mine or district, taking the facts you uncover and placing them in historical perspective. (What are the bigger trends in mining during the various stages of your mine’s life? How does this fit with those, or not? What can you find out about the personal histories of the people involved?)
