Catalog Description

This course incorporates a variety of activities including exercises with the stability ball, BOSU ball, Pilates mat, and yoga styles of core work to enhance abdominal, lower back, gluteal, and hip strength with toning benefits to the entire body.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Develop better posture, body alignment, and balance

2. Demonstrate proper form and techniques when executing various skills

3. Increase and balance muscle strength, particularly of the abdominals, lower back, hips, and gluteals

4. Create a personalized exercise program for lifelong fitness

Evaluation: GRADING SCALE

Active Participation 60 Points 90-100 points = A

Research Paper 20 Points 80-89 points = B

Fitness Testing 20 Points 70-79 points = C

60-69 points = D

Total Points 100 Points < 59 points = F

THE RESEARCH PAPER: the student chooses a topic related to fitness, research that topic, use 3 resources, and submit electronically, a three-page paper, using college format.

Please include: Title Page, Body of the Report (3 pages), and a References Page listing the three resources that were used in researching your topic.

ATTENDANCE:

Up to three absences for the semester will be permitted without penalty. Each absence after three will result in a lowering of one letter grade per absence. There will be no make-ups given!

CLASS RULES AND REQUIREMENTS:

· Mutual respect will be maintained during class at all times.

· Be on time! Students will not be allowed to participate if they miss the warm-up.

· Students must notify the instructor before class begins of all physical injuries, limitations and problems that might affect participation.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

HEALTH INSURANCE: American River College does not provide any medical insurance for enrolled students.

LOCKERS: Locks and lockers are available in the locker rooms. There is a $7.00 deposit for the lock. No checks accepted. You cannotuse your own lock, it will be removed. A locker will be assigned to you for the semester.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS: You will need to wear appropriate shoes and comfortable workout clothes. Socks and shoes are mandatory. Bring a towel and a water bottle if you desire. NO STREET CLOTHES!!

PARTICIPANTS: Only those enrolled in the class will be permitted to participate. Children will not be permitted to attend or to watch class without the permission of the instructor.

PER-EXISTING CONDITIONS: Exceptional needs, acute injuries and pre-existing conditions should be identified to the instructor prior to engaging in any activity. This may require the student to modify and/or use alternatives to specific parts of the workout.

SAFETY: Report all accidents and injuries to the instructor.

DROPS: Students not attending this class on a regular basis will be dropped by the instructor.

PERSONAL SPACE: This as a class that may require the instructor to touch the student in order to ensure proper alignment and safe execution of certain movements and exercises. If this will make you uncomfortable, please talk to the instructor.
