CLASS 505 UNIT 4 QD1

Topic 1: Read the required reading. Review the Determinants of Health website and view the short video and content. https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/about/foundation-health-measures/Determinants-of-Health

For this discussion you will identify and define determinants of health for an individual or family population at risk including social, environmental and global factors as applicable. How you approach the discussion is your choice. You may choose a condition or topic first then elaborate from there, while including the population characteristics and determinants of health. Alternatively you may choose to define a specific population, such as rural Appalachian single mothers, and then address risks and the determinants of health.

Please review the Discussion Board Participation grading rubric under Course Resources in the Grading Rubrics section.

This is important information that will ensure that you earn maximum points. Your postings should be qualitative and provide substantive depth that advances the discussion.

Please see the Kaplan Writing Center located in the student portal for assistance with writing, APA, and online communication.

What are your thoughts???

Emotional intelligence by definition is “the nurse’s ability to identify people’s emotions from their expressions, including body language, facial expressions, and spoken word” (Whitney, 2020). Being able to perceive nurses and understand their emotions can help in acknowledging and helping them find an answer to a question or problem. There are five key elements in emotional intelligence which include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. Self awareness is understanding people’s emotions and how they affect others (Whitney, 2020). Nurse leaders and managers must understand and develop all of these key elements to run a successful team. Being able to control and manage a person’s own emotions is key in developing skills to help others. A leader is someone that people follow to accomplish a common goal, work together to be successful and to being aware of a person’s strengths and weaknesses. A person with a high degree of self-awareness is confident but not cocky, encourages feedback and looks to improve a team and not self destruct it. Being self-aware of their own emotions while recognizing another person’s emotions and able to give positive criticism while encouraging discussions and questions are important in being a successful leader. An example of self awareness is having a difficult conversation with somebody about their insufficient care, and having the best intentions of helping that person and supporting them with any comments or concerns of why they were not providing great care like they normally do. Being able to recognize and have the best intentions of finding out why whether it was a bad day or if they need something from their leadership team. Self-awareness is key in managing emotions and a person’s character, time management and balancing work and family life (Whitney, 2020).

Quantitative Research Designs

Quantitative Research Designs

In order to find the best information on a topic, not only should you develop a question and search for resources, but you should also know how to analyze the value of the resources that you identify. There are different ways to evaluate resources, such as using the hierarchy of evidence, which you explored in Week 4 of this course. Another way to evaluate resources is to consider the appropriateness of the research design. Understanding how research designs contribute to the quality of a study is essential for being able to analyze resources when conducting a literature review or locating evidence for practice.

In this Discussion, you consider the different research designs and evaluate how these designs have been used to research a specific topic. You also consider strategies for selecting an appropriate research design.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in the course texton quantitative research designs. Focus on the information in Box 9.1, “Guidelines for Critiquing Research Designs in Quantitative Studies” located on page 230 of the course text.
  • Select a topic from the list below and search the Walden Library to find two different quantitative research studies addressing that issue:
    • Caregiver stress
    • Anxiety in children
    • Sleep apnea
    • Depression in college freshmen
    • Rural health care issues
    • Post-traumatic stress syndrome
    • Traumatic brain injury in veterans
    • Health effects of environmental contaminants
    • Bipolar disorder
    • End-of-life ethical issues
    • Alternative medicine
  • For each of the sources that you select, identify the type of quantitative research design used, and evaluate whether it is the most appropriate approach to the research.
  • Consider the ramifications of choosing an inappropriate design for a research study.

Post  (1) the topic you selected,  references for the two sources you identified, and the quantitative research design used in each. (2) Critique the appropriateness of the design used and justify your comments with information from the Learning Resources. (3) Discuss the ramifications of choosing an inappropriate design for a research study.

if martinez wants to minimize tax payments in the first year of the machine rsquo s 609756

Juan Martinez, CFO of VIRMIN, S.A., is selecting the depreciation method to use for a new machine. The machine has an expected useful life of six years. Production is expected to be relatively low initially but to increase over time. The method chosen for tax reporting must be the same as the method used for financial reporting. If Martinez wants to minimize tax payments in the first year of the machine’s life, which of the following depreciation methods is Martinez most likely to use?

A. Straight-line method

Question 1

Tools used in the collection and analysis of quantitative data need to undergo a document review, observation, questionnaires, and interviews. These tools should have certain features to provide valid quantitative research. While there are individual characteristics for every tool that is used, some general features that enhance the validity of the data are as follow. Firstly, the data collected from different respondents should display uniformity. For instance, the questions provided should be the same for all respondents to assist in comparing information, especially during analysis (De Leeuw, 2008). This characteristic helps in reinforcing the validity of the information.

This characteristic applies to interviews, questionnaires, and surveys. The second feature should the tools used and the need for them to be objective and free from bias. In this case, they should be guided by the hypothesis to ascertain that the researcher is adhering to the required scope of the study. This feature applies to observation, questionnaires, and interviews among others. Thirdly, the criteria used to obtain the answers should be simple and direct to avoid erroneous or misinterpreted answers. The questions used in the questionnaire, survey, and interviews should be direct and clear for respondents to provide clear answers (Alshenqeeti, 2014). The type of questions and how they are structured as well as the tools used in the administration influences the validity of the responses.

Lastly, the method used should be easy to understand for the respondent to take a reasonable amount of time comprehending the tool as opposed to a large amount (Gill, Stewart, Treasure, & Chadwick, 2008). Some tools such as the survey may be conducted without the presence of a researcher. Therefore, four major features of research tools influence the validity of the data. These are uniformity, objectivity, and free from bias, simple and direct criteria in obtaining answers, as well as self-explanatory. These features play an important role in the reliability and validity of the information.
