FORMAT: MLA (front page, endnotes, Works Cited), 12-pt., Arial or TNR, typed

In this essay, you will be able to argue on a topic of your choice.

Topic: Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper,”

This paper is both argument and analysis. There are at least 4 ways to approach it:

  • Analysis and argument concerning one text
  • Synthesis of two texts, at least one from the course readings
  • Treatment of a theme/motif that appears in more than one text
  • Analysis and argument concerning an author, e.g., the author’s mental condition, background and life, philosophy of life, etc.

The elements below are what I consider to be significant elements for an effective paper:

  • Clear, identifiable thesis statement/essay map
  • Effective opening which alerts the reader to what you intend to discuss, argue, illustrate, prove, etc.
  • Body paragraphs which contain the following:
  • A conclusion which does the following:
  • Unity: it establishes a tight, single-minded path and progression of discussion so as not to confuse the reader about your intended argument, illustration, etc.
  • Coherence: all parts work together for a whole that remains consistent and logical in its development.
  • Understanding of grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Clear, effective, brief (no more than 2 sentences) topic sentence
  • Your original voice, that is, creative and insightful thinking
  • Support through citation, logical argument, and/or illustrative examples.
  • Briefly revisits the highlights of the paper in the body paragraphs
  • A “takeaway” that the reader can remember, for example, a call to action, something huge or impactful upon which the reader can meditate.

RESEARCH: The paper must have at least FIVE documented outside sources. These sources may include print books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and the Web. NOTE: no more than TWO Web sources; I like Wikipedia myself, but for academic purposes, it is not allowed here. Online databases include JStor, ProQuest, Ebsco, and Google databases.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: this assignment must include, at minimum, the following 3 items:

  • Correct MLA citation of the source
  • A brief summary of what the source is about, what it argues, illustrates, etc.
  • Why it is important for your research.
