Scope Management and Health Checks

Your brother in-law is about to submit a scope statement to the town council for the July 4th parade and picnic he has volunteered to project manage. Your town has about 6,000 households, and this is the first time the town council gave a tentative approval for the parade and picnic. The council president thinks that about $1,500 can be allocated for the event. Since your brother in-law knows you are taking a project management class, he has asked that you to look over his draft scope statement. He knows that the scope statement should be professional so that the town council will see him as responsible and allocate the money for the parade and picnic. Here is his scope statement.

OVERVIEW

This collection pulls together 11 scenes from three stories to examine the intersection of race and class through the lenses of criminal justice, housing and education. Review the information, watch the senses, and answer the questions provided.

KEY CONCEPT

Intersectionality refers to the idea that the overlap of various social identities, such as race, gender, sexual orientation and class, contributes to the speciic type of systemic oppression and discrimination experienced by an individual.

The term itself is attributed to legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, though the idea goes back to the 19th century. Crenshaw coined the term in the 1980s as a way to talk about how diferent kinds of discrimination interact. In particular, she applied the theory to a problem in anti-discrimination law. She argued that because the law treated race and gender separately, it did not adequately protect Black women who experience the compound or overlapping efects of discrimination. Today, the theory is applied to popular feminism and in social justice contexts in general.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

  1. What is the relationship between race and class?
  2. How do race and class work together to privilege or disadvantage certain communities?
  3. Can race and class be understood in isolation?
  4. What similarities do you see in the scenes about housing, criminal justice and education? What about differences?
  5. How do identities such as gender, sexual orientation and ability impact people’s experiences of race and class?
  6. How do the experiences of people of color vary based on their socioeconomic class?
  7. How do the experiences of people living in poverty vary based on their race?

In your initial post, answer the following questions:

  1. Should organizational leaders modify their mentoring style when mentoring minority employees?
  2. How can an organization known for its mismanagement of diversity regain public trust regarding diversity?

regan-death-of-josseline

Regan, Death of Josseline, Introduction & Chapters 1, 5, 8, 9. Write a response to question 1 and one other question of your choice. Each response should be 500 words.

1. According to the Federation for Immigration Reform, a prominent immigration restriction group illegal immigration to the US undermines legal immigration, flouts American sovereignty “draining public funds, creating unfair competition for jobs with America’s least prepared workers and thereby lowering wages and working conditions, and … imposing unwanted strains on services designed to provide assistance to Americans.”

After reading the Death of Josseline are you more or less sympathetic to FAIR’s argument that ” legal immigration causes harm to Americans and legal residents” and that further efforts should be taken to police the border and empower states to aprehend undocumented immigrants.

Explain your response drawing on at least 3 specific episodes in the book.

2. No More Deaths activists have the most contentious relationship with law enforcement of all the southern Arizona groups. Humane Borders, for example, always gets permission to place its water tanks on public land. (The Tohono O’odham activist Mike Wilson is the exception.) Should activists be arrested for pursuing what they believe are humanitarian goals but nonetheless impede border law enforcement and perhaps encourage dangerous migrations? Numerous activists have been arrested on charges of littering for placing water bottles in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. Are these littering charges appropriate. How far would you be willing to go to save a human life? Would you be willing to break laws, be arrested and face charges and possible jail time? If so, is this the cause you would be willing to break a law or some other cause?

4. Some readers of the book have criticized Josseline’s mother, Sonia, for arranging for her children to travel without her from El Salvador to Los Angeles. Why did Sonia do this? Did she have other options? Should Sonia have taken this risk? Should she have given 14-year-old Josseline the heavy responsibility of caring for her 10-year-old brother on such a long and dangerous journey? How far would you go to reunite your family?
