SOME TERM PAPER POINTERS:

A. Proofread your paper for grammar and spelling errors even if you use spell check.

B. Keep a copy of your term paper.

C. Remember to use third-person, gender neutral nouns and pronouns throughout.

D. Remember to use singular verbs and pronouns with singular noun/pronoun referents. Similarly, always use plural verbs and pronouns with plural noun/pronoun referents.

E. Do not justify the right margin in science writing.

F. Do not use contractions in your term paper.

G. Remember to use APA style in citations in your narrative. You may only cite in your paper books/articles from your List of References.

H. When you paraphrase from your sources, you need only cite the author(s) surname(s) and year of publication. With direct quotes, you must also include the page number(s).

Term papers must follow the guidelines in the American Psychological Association Publication Manual (6th edition) for citations in the text and the List of References. You may not list any reference that you have not cited in the text. Your term paper grade will be based on the quality of your research, the presentation and development of your topic, adherence to APA format plus correct grammar and spelling.

HINTS ABOUT REFERENCES

A. The minimum number of reference sources is eight (8).

B. Of the eight required references, only three (3) or fewer may come from0n-line sources. The internet houses vast amounts of information; however, for scientific/technical areas such as behavioral sciences, one cannot trust the reliability of on-line sources, e.g., non-peer reviewed publications. It may be best to use on-line sources sparingly.

C. Webster’s or other dictionaries, including Wikipedia and other encyclopedias are not acceptable, scientific references. Psychology Today and other magazine/newsletter/newspaper sources are also not acceptable, scientific references.

D. You may not use your textbook as a reference or a source for material in your term paper.

E. Primary sources are encouraged. For instance, rather than read someone else’s explanation of what Freud means by dream analysis, why not read Freud’s own Interpretation of Dreams?

F. When using studies that support empirical findings, remember that recent studies are generally more persuasive than older studies.

G. The bulk of your paper should be in your own words, with appropriate citations to indicate the sources of your information. When you paraphrase, you essentially explain the essence of a study or a theory you have read, but you use your own words, and you cite the sources of your information. When you copy from a source, you are directly quoting; thus, you must use quotation marks or indenting (for long quotes) and you must add the page numbers to your citation.
