Examination of stereotypes, stereotype formation, and the relationship of stereotypes to prejudice and discrimination is a field of study within social psychology. These three constructs are certainly distinct; however, they are clearly related. At times, individuals automatically stereotype with negative consequences. Social psychologists are identifying ways to address automatic stereotyping (Wright & Taylor, 2007).

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources and consider whether or not it is possible not to stereotype.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 your argument regarding whether or not it is possible to avoid stereotyping. Then explain how stereotyping relates to prejudice and discrimination. Finally, explain two ways to mitigate stereotyping.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and the current literature.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 6 to your colleagues’ postings in one of the following ways.

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.
