rhetorically-compare-two-editorials-on-your-research-topic

one from the NYT and one found using a google search.

Editorial 1: author(s), title, publication, date

Editorial 2: author(s), title, publication, date

  • What is the title of each editorial? Which title do you find more effective in terms of grabbing your attention and reflecting the author’s argument? Why?
  • Compare the opening hook of each editorial: how does each open – ie anecdote, statistic, fact, example, question, etc. Which hook is more effective? Why?
  • Look for a few examples of the author using emotionally charged diction in each editorial. Which is more effective in terms of evoking an emotional response from readers? Why?
  • What types of evidence does each author use to support/build their argument? Which has stronger, more convincing evidence, and why?
  • Overall, which editorial do you find the most convincing and why? Explain.
  • What did you learn from these two editorials about arguing your topic? About how to write your own editorial?
