Muscle Relaxants

Highlight agents used to treat muscle spasms and muscle spasticity, and appraise the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a specific class of drugs for one of these conditions. (MO 1)
Examine the potential adverse effects that medications used to treat muscle spasms or muscle spasticity may cause and how that may impact a patient’s ability to participate fully in rehabilitation or the possible adjustments that may need to be made. (MO 2)
Choose A) and support your information with additional research, include your thoughts/opinions, share personal experience when applicable, and discuss PT implications:

A) Provide an overview of a diagnosis (definition, etiology, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms…) that may be treated with a muscle relaxant (i.e. muscle spasm, or spasticity in cerebral palsy), and discuss how a specific pharmacological agent is used in its management (include common uses, mechanism of action, anticipated response to the treatment, adverse effects, possible drug-drug and drug-food interactions). How might the adverse effects impact physical therapy intervention and education?
