Part 1: Food Environment

Describe your own “food environment” (either current or childhood). Aim for depth in your analysis, reflecting this module’s content regarding this concept, not just a superficial (or general) description.

Why are characteristics of a “food environment” important for food system sustainability? Discuss.

 

Part 2: Food Security & Hunger

Reflecting on the viewing, “Food Insecurity in the U.S.,” can you relate to any of the speaker’s voiced assumptions or preconceptions of food (in)security or hunger? Have your views (opinions, etc.) on the “face of hunger” or contributing factors to food (in)security changed or broadened? Explain.

 

Part 3: Food Waste

Conduct a mental (or, even better, actual) “waste audit” of your diet/lifestyle. What food(s) get thrown away (think about beverages, too)? Why? And where does it go (e.g., trash/landfill, compost, donation, etc.)? Consider and discuss some strategies to reduce your personal food waste ‘footprint’.

Then, offer suggestions for policy to reduce food waste (at the community level, local level, regional/state level, and national levels). For all of these, what might be some barriers to reducing food waste?

Why does “food waste” matter in food system sustainability? Discuss.
