Leadership in the 21st Century

Type: Case Study

1500 Words for Leader Case Study

Task Description:

The aim of this assessment is to examine the relationship between leadership theory and practice. This assessment takes the form of a case study to allow students to analyse a practical example of leadership through the lens of one or more theoretical perspectives.

Note

  • Choose a leader.. a widely recognised public figure who currently occupies a high profile leadership position
  • Choose three theories of leadership such as transformational leadership, ethical leadership, servant leadership, (see lectures for more); must be related to selected leader
  • You can refer to sample report

Key Requirements:

First, students must select a leader for their case study. Students are free to make this choice, however, their chosen leader must be a widely recognised public figure who currently occupies a high profile leadership position. For example, sufficient information about this leader should be widely available on the internet.

Second, students must choose three theories or frameworks covered in this course. For example, a student might select ‘transformational leadership’ and examine how a political leader uses this to manage ‘organisational change’ within their party. Another case study might examine ‘ethical leadership’ against the backdrop of a corporate scandal and the use of ‘position power’ by a CEO.

Third, the case study must clearly draw from these theories and related research to critically analyse the chosen leader in terms of their leadership style(s) and the impact this has on others. An overview of the leadership context must also be provided, for example, is the company experiencing a crisis, or is it operating in a stable and predictable business environment?

Finally, students are expected to read beyond the textbook by making reference to relevant academic journal articles, which should be formatted in an appropriate referencing style (APA)
