BIO 101 Lab

Read an article reporting about biology in a popular news source (e.g. newspaper, online news site, magazine).

a. The article needs to be reporting about a topic related to biology. If there is not AT LEAST five biology terms in the article, it does not count as a biology article.

b. The article needs to be from within the last year.

c. The article must be attached to your review so keep a copy.

WRITTEN REQUIREMENTS:

List the Citation: Author. Date. Title. Publication (where you found it)

Summarize the Article:

IN YOUR OWN WORDS, summarize what the article is about. Read the article first and then explain what you think the article was about. Do not just repeat facts but look for the reasoning behind the article. For example, if an article about research, try to identify the question that the researchers are trying to answer and, if it is included, identify their hypothesis. Describe the experimental design and summarize the results of the experiment. Discuss the conclusions the authors made about their question.

Explain Your Response:

This is NOT what the author thinks but what you think about the article. This section CAN be written in 1st person. You can think about the following questions as you write your response but do not answer these questions. How well was the article written? Did you understand everything? Did you have more questions? Is there enough information provided in the article for you to evaluate the quality of the information or research? If yes, what is your evaluation of the quality? If not, what other information would you need to have in order to make this judgment? Explain your reasoning. Summarize your own unique response.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be typed (10 – 12 pt font, double spaced, minimum 1 full page)

· Due at the BEGINNING of lab on the date assigned

· Must include an attachment of the article to your summary

· Do not copy any text directly from the article or you will not receive credit for the assignment.
