The purpose of this assignment is to analyze the complexity and subtlety of two works by two different authors that have been assigned this semester. (So that you expand your understanding, please do not re-examine the work that you discussed in your first essay.) Think about the works’ imagery, syntax, tone, rhyme, meter, allusions, and figures of speech before you begin devising a thesis and before you start the writing process. As with the first assignment, you need to go into considerable detail and examine the multiple implications of the authors’ choices. Remember to respect the texts’ complexity by acknowledging, when appropriate, alternative readings and relevant connotations.
